Borrelli Johnson, Francesca Environmental Fund

The Francesca Borrelli Johnson Environmental Fund was established in her honor by family and friends following her tragic death on December 26, 2004.

Remembered as a darling daughter and wife; an engaged student; an eager learner; a loyal friend; a valued colleague; a committed volunteer; and a passionate environmentalist, her absolute passion was protecting and restoring the environment. From her youth she demonstrated a love of animals, but particularly marine life, most especially dolphins. She spent summers at the St. Mary’s College Bay Study Program where she developed a special interest and concern for the Chesapeake Bay. At the University of Tampa she became involved in programs protecting sea turtles. Her Bachelor’s degree was from Towson State University in Geology and she was pursuing a Masters Degree in Water Resource Management. In March of 2005, she was nominated for an Outstanding Graduate Student award from Towson State University.

Francesca’s work involved thousands of Phase I surveys and environmental assessments for PMT and Associates, EMG Company, and EBI Consulting of York, PA. She was certified in Maryland and Virginia for asbestos and lead inspections.

Not satisfied with just a career dedicated to the environment, Francesca’s personal time was dedicated to projects that would improve the Chesapeake Bay. Learning of her death, The Upper Western Shore Tributary Team remarked, “Fran’s enthusiasm for the environment and the Bay and her insightful and inquisitive mind were admired by all of us.”

Francesca Borrelli Johnson will always be remembered for her infectious smile; her caring nature; her enthusiasm; her interest; and the warmth and well being she projected into any encounter she had with another person. She was special and she will be missed.

The purpose of the Francesca Borrelli Johnson Environmental Fund is to perpetuate her character, ideals, and goals by providing grants for practical or scholarly work directed toward improving or maintaining the quality of land, air, and water resources, and by providing scholarships to students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Environmental Sciences or Management/ Administration of the Environment.
