Stem, The George Stem Memorial Football Scholarship

The George L. Stem Football Scholarship Fund was established to honor and pay tribute to George, who graduated from Westminster High School in 1962. George ran track and played varsity football for 3 years. The University of Maryland recruited George and signed him to play football beginning in 1962. He was given a one year scholarship and at the end of his freshman year; the scholarship was extended for 3 more years.

Earl Hersh, one of George’s coaches at WHS, was quoted saying “George was an extreme overachiever. He didn’t know any limits. He just worked hard to make himself a great ball player, even though he didn’t have a lot of God given talent.” George graduated from the University of Maryland in January of 1966 having earned the following awards: The Alfred Albino Unsung Hero Award, The Charles S. Faller Award for the player who contributed the most to athletics at MD, and The Maryland Ring given to the outstanding senior athlete. Only one Maryland ring is given each year at the Awards Banquet. The recipient of this scholarship should love the game of football and possess the following attributes: integrity, generosity, accountability, have a sense of humor, must be outgoing, be a leader, be sympathetic to others, must be hard working and give 110% on and off the field. These qualities always have described George.
